Wild New Zealand

Bubbling geysers, enchanted rainforests, silent fjords and icy glaciers: New Zealand's diversity is hard to match anywhere else. Isolated between three oceans, its wildlife evolved in unusual ways over more than 80 million years. There were no predatory mammals here, a luxury that led some bird species to lose the ability to fly. The Terra Mater three-part series “Wild New Zealand” traces the qualities that make this island nation so magical.

Unfortunately this series is no longer available online. Thanks again to Servus TV.

Wild New Zealand 1, Islands at the End of the World: the first episode of the Terra Mater series takes a close look at New Zealand's unusual wildlife, which was able to evolve undisturbed in isolation from the rest of the world. At first glance the country seems surprisingly familiar: mountains, glaciers and wide plains that often recall North America or Europe. Look closer, though, and the flora and fauna of these islands turn out to be remarkably different, and downright bizarre.

Wild New Zealand 2, Realm of Extremes: the second part of the series is all about New Zealand's contrasts. While the north of the country feels sunny, warm and born of volcanic fire, the south shows its cold, unpredictable side. The coasts are battered by hurricane-force winds, glaciers reach right down to the sea, and in the rugged Southern Alps animals have to cope with ice and snow every single day. Surviving in this realm of extremes takes adaptability, toughness and cunning.

Wild New Zealand 3, Fight for Paradise: the final episode of the trilogy looks at the changes New Zealand's unique flora and fauna are up against. Some of the original species, such as the kiwi, kea and weka, have managed to hold their ground. Many others, though, are under serious threat or close to extinction.
