The rule of thumb: rent under about two months, after that the presale pays off
If you're only travelling through New Zealand for a few weeks, a classic rental agreement works out cheaper. Under about two months, buying usually isn't worth it: the savings are too small, and returning the vehicle or selling it privately at the end still takes a few days. But if you're planning around two months or longer, or doing a Working Holiday, the presale quickly pays off.
The key difference is in how you pay: with a rental, you pay per day. With the presale, you buy the camper once and sell it back after your trip at a guaranteed buyback price. That makes it a real alternative for anyone travelling longer.
What exactly is the presale?
With the presale, you buy the camper at a fixed price. After your trip, whenever you're done, Chilli Rentals buys it back at a guaranteed price. You don't have to deal with a private sale, and you carry no price risk.
Your net cost is the difference between the purchase price and the buyback price. The longer your trip, the smaller this difference gets compared to accumulated daily rental costs, and the more the presale pays off.
The big advantage beyond the numbers: no daily counter running in your head, complete freedom over your schedule, and the feeling of owning your own vehicle. You can spontaneously stay longer without every extra day burning a hole in your wallet.
At the end, you have two options: take the guaranteed buyback from Chilli Rentals as your safety net, no listing, no negotiating. Or sell the camper yourself to the next wave of backpackers. Depending on the season, you can often get close to the full purchase price, especially in spring when the next wave of travellers arrives. In that case, your trip ends up costing you little more than fuel and campsites. If you go the private sale route, plan for a few days of buffer at the end.

What speaks for renting
- Very short trips under about 8 weeks: the rental price stays lower than the presale net cost.
- No upfront capital needed: with the presale, you pay the purchase price in advance.
- Insurance often included: with the presale, you need to arrange liability and comprehensive cover separately.
- Less commitment: just hand it back and you're done, no bureaucratic buyback process.
What speaks for the presale
- Trips of around two months or longer, or a Working Holiday: significantly cheaper per day than any rental option.
- Complete freedom over your schedule: no daily rental counter, you decide when you head back.
- Stay longer on a whim: extra days cost nothing more, and there's no stress about extending a booking.
- Flexible exit: a guaranteed buyback as your safety net, or sell privately to the next backpackers, often for close to the full purchase price depending on the season.
Who suits what?
Working Holiday travellers (6 to 12 months): the presale is almost always the better choice, cheaper and more flexible. It's the most common decision among long-term travellers.
Backpackers (3 to 5 months): the presale pays off from around two months onward. Below that, renting is usually cheaper, especially in the shoulder season with lower daily rates.
Couples and families on a short trip (4 to 8 weeks): renting is straightforward, needs no upfront capital, and lets you choose your model flexibly.
How the presale works, step by step
The presale is simpler than it sounds. You get in touch with us with your desired travel period, planned duration, and vehicle type. We send you a quote with the purchase price and guaranteed buyback price. That's your net cost overview, in writing, before you sign anything.
After booking, you pay the purchase price upfront. When you pick up the vehicle in Auckland or Christchurch, you get a thorough walkthrough of all its features, and it's yours from that moment on. You can drive wherever you want, park on farmland, stay longer on a whim, all without ever having to check in with us.
At the end of your trip, you bring the vehicle back to the depot. We check its condition and carry out the buyback at the price agreed beforehand. You get the amount transferred, usually within 2 to 5 business days. No TradeMe listing, no hunting for a buyer, no haggling in a car park.
What happens to the camper after your trip
After the buyback, Chilli Rentals services, cleans, and prepares the vehicle for the next travel season. That's the cycle of the presale: the camper stays in service in New Zealand, and you take your memories home with you.
What happens if there's damage? Normal wear and tear from driving is factored in and not a problem. For real damage, dents, broken glass, technical faults, the contract sets out clear terms, which we go through together before handover. A good travel insurance policy with vehicle cover is mandatory and protects you in these situations.
Three questions you should ask before signing
Before you book the presale, it's worth having a short conversation where we work through your specific case together. Three questions help with the decision: How confident are you about your trip length? The longer you can plan for with confidence, the more clearly the presale pays off. Which vehicle do you want? Net costs vary considerably by model. Do you have the upfront capital for the purchase price? That's the one requirement without which the presale doesn't work.
Our presale page has an interactive calculator that shows the comparison to renting for your specific situation. Use it as a first step, then get in touch: we'll work through your specific case with you, no pressure, no sales pitch.
One thing people often forget: after booking the presale, there are no further ongoing costs for the vehicle itself. The camper is in ready-to-drive condition and stays that way for the whole trip. What you need to insure separately and which responsibilities are yours, we'll go through transparently in conversation before you sign anything. Many customers say afterwards that the conversation before signing was the most valuable part of the whole process, because it cleared up questions that would otherwise have surfaced during the trip.
Frequently Asked Questions
- From how many weeks does the presale pay off?
- As a rough guide: from about 8 to 10 weeks. The exact break-even point depends on the model you choose, the travel season, and the rental price comparison. Our presale page has an interactive calculator that works out the numbers live for your specific situation. The calculator also accounts for different vehicle classes, so you can compare various scenarios directly.
- What happens if the camper gets damaged?
- Even with the presale, you're liable for damage. Comprehensive vehicle insurance for the duration of your stay in NZ is mandatory; we recommend an NZ travel insurance policy with vehicle cover. We're happy to go through the details with you before booking and make sure you understand what covers what.
- Can I view the camper before buying?
- At pick-up in Auckland or Christchurch, you get a thorough walkthrough and plenty of time to get to know your camper. We can also send photos and all the details by email beforehand, because feeling confident before you set off matters to us.
- How long after returning the vehicle do I receive the buyback price?
- Usually within 2 to 5 business days after you return the vehicle. The transfer goes to the account you provide, whether in Germany, Austria, or New Zealand.
- What if I want to cancel the presale before I fly out?
- Cancellation terms are set out in the contract and vary depending on when you cancel. If you cancel in good time, you usually only lose a small processing fee. We're pragmatic and fair, especially when your circumstances change at short notice. It's always worth talking to us before you file a formal cancellation.
- Can I still change the vehicle model after booking the presale?
- As long as the camper hasn't been handed over yet, you can change the model, provided a suitable vehicle is available. Once you've taken it over, the vehicle is fixed. That's why it's worth working out in advance which model suits you best, so pick-up marks the start of a great trip.
