Campervan Honeymoon: New Zealand for Newlyweds

A campervan honeymoon through New Zealand sounds unconventional, and most couples remember it as the trip of a lifetime. Here's why, and how to plan it right.

Why a camper honeymoon is so special

No hotel in the world offers what a campervan in New Zealand does: total privacy at all times, the freedom to wake up somewhere new the next morning, and shared experiences that bring two people together in a way a resort hotel never could. In the camper you navigate together, cook together, solve problems together, and then marvel at the view together.

A camper honeymoon means no tour group, no bus ticket, no guided excursion. Each morning you decide whether to have breakfast by the lake or keep driving. If you fall in love with Milford Sound and want to add another day, there's no check-out and no rebooking, you just stay.

And as for price: a camper honeymoon in New Zealand costs a fraction of a comparable week in the Maldives. But the real difference isn't the price, it's the kind of experience you get. Most couples say afterwards that it was the trip of their lives, not despite the camper, but because of it.

The right vehicle for your honeymoon

For honeymoon couples we recommend the Super Traveller, our most comfortable model for two: a large double bed, a well-equipped kitchen, and self-contained for freedom camping. The difference from our smaller entry-level model shows up every day, because after a long day of hiking you sleep better in a good bed.

During the booking conversation we sort out the details: the bed configuration (crosswise or lengthwise), whether there's a coffee machine on board, and whether you should bring extra bedding or towels. Small things that make a real difference day to day.

Honeymoon route: South Island

Fourteen days across the South Island is the classic honeymoon route: a relaxed start in Christchurch, alpine lakes and starry skies, fjords, and finishing with the quiet beauty of Wānaka.

Honeymoon route: South Island

14 days
Christchurch1 / 7
  1. Colourful houses on New Regent Street in Christchurch, South Island New Zealand1
    ChristchurchDay 1-2

A calm start after the long-haul flight. Pick up the camper, take a walk around town, have dinner on New Regent Street. No rushing, the trip begins at an easy pace.

  2. Church of the Good Shepherd at Lake Tekapo, South Island New Zealand2
    Lake TekapoDay 3-4

The drive takes you through the Canterbury Plains, then the road turns into the Mackenzie Basin, and suddenly the lake is right in front of you, turquoise blue with the mountain panorama behind it. In the evening, the observatory tour at the Dark Sky Reserve, and at night the Milky Way visible to the naked eye. This isn't a marketing promise, the night sky really does look like this here.

  3. Aoraki/Mount Cook above the Hooker Valley, South Island New Zealand3
    Aoraki/Mount CookDay 5-6

The drive along Lake Pukaki, milky turquoise from the glacial melt, is an experience in itself. The Hooker Valley Track takes four hours to reach the glacier lake. Have a picnic on the way back with a view of ice and rock.

  4. Queenstown on Lake Wakatipu against the Remarkables, South Island New Zealand4
    QueenstownDay 7-8

A morning drive to Glenorchy, along the shore of Lake Wakatipu with the mountains right across from you. Explore Arrowtown in the afternoon, have a romantic dinner in the evening, then take the gondola for a view over the city lights and Lake Wakatipu.

  5. Excursion boat on Milford Sound, Fiordland New Zealand5
    Te Anau & MilfordDay 9-10

Stay overnight in Te Anau. The next morning, head out early on the Milford Road, 122 kilometres of the wildest scenery, through the Homer Tunnel, then your first view of the fjord and Mitre Peak. A two-hour boat tour lets you get close enough to touch the waterfalls, watch dolphins, and spot seals on the rocks.

  6. Sunrise over Lake Wānaka from Roys Peak, South Island New Zealand6
    WānakaDay 11-13

Sunrise at Roys Peak together, set off at 4:30am and reach the top just as the first morning light breaks over the mountains. Spend one of these days simply by the lake, with no plan at all.

  7. New Regent Street in Christchurch, the final stop of the honeymoon, South Island New Zealand
    ChristchurchDay 14

Return the camper in Christchurch via the Lindis Pass, or fly directly out of Queenstown.

Planning special moments

Spontaneity is good, but a few moments deserve some planning. The telescope tour at Lake Tekapo needs to be booked because spots are limited: earthandsky.co.nz is the operator (from 45 NZD per person). Sunrise at Roys Peak means setting off at 4:30am, not 5. Miss the first light and you lose half the effect.

For the picnic on the Hooker Valley Track: Pak'nSave in Christchurch or Timaru is the last big supermarket before Mount Cook. Bring good cheese, good bread, and wine.

Holiday parks in Queenstown and Rotorua often have outdoor hot pools for guests. Plan for one holiday park stay per week, and in Queenstown look specifically for one with a pool.

  • Lake Tekapo observatory: book via earthandsky.co.nz (from 45 NZD per person)
  • Roys Peak at sunrise: set off at 4:30am, no exceptions
  • Picnic at Hooker Valley: shop beforehand in Christchurch or Timaru
  • Holiday park with hot pool: available in Queenstown and Rotorua

Budget: what a two-week camper honeymoon costs

Fourteen days for two across the South Island, including camper rental, accommodation, food, and a few activities, realistically comes to 3,500 to 5,500 NZD (roughly 1,900 to 3,000 €). That sounds like a lot, until you compare it to a week in the Maldives.

The breakdown: Super Traveller rental for 14 days approx. 1,800 to 2,200 NZD, campsites (freedom camping, DOC sites, a few holiday parks) approx. 400 to 600 NZD, food and drinks approx. 600 to 900 NZD, fuel approx. 250 to 350 NZD, activities (Milford cruise, gondola, observatory) approx. 400 to 600 NZD.

One tip: don't plan a paid activity for every single day. The best moments, Roys Peak, Lake Pukaki, the morning drive to Glenorchy, cost nothing but time.

Off the classic route: insider tips for honeymoon couples

The classic honeymoon route across the South Island covers all the highlights. What's less well known: the best moments often happen off the beaten path.

Akaroa on the Banks Peninsula, an hour and a half from Christchurch, is the little French village most couples don't plan for. It sits inside an extinct volcanic crater, the harbour is sheltered and turquoise, and the tiny main street has good food without the crowds. Spend a night by the harbour, have your morning coffee looking out over the fjord, then continue towards Tekapo. That turns Christchurch into two days instead of one.

Arrowtown, twenty minutes from Queenstown, is for many couples the most moving surprise of the whole trip. The former gold-mining town has kept its main street exactly as it was: stone buildings, pioneer cottages, shop after shop. In autumn the plane trees along Lake Hayes Road turn a blaze of gold and red. This is an October and April experience that simply doesn't happen in January.

What really makes a camper honeymoon

Most couples arrive with the reservation that a camper might not be comfortable enough for a honeymoon. Almost all of them come back without that reservation.

What really happens: you're together, without interruption and without the distraction of hotel TV or a pool bar. Cooking becomes a ritual, driving becomes conversation, the evening becomes planning together with no pressure. It's not what you're used to from a resort hotel, and it's better.

And then there are moments no hotel in the world can give you: waking up at Lake Tekapo before anyone else is awake, seeing the Milky Way through the skylight above your bed, standing alone on the Milford Road at sunrise because you set off early enough. These moments don't come from a catalogue and can't be ordered. They happen because you're simply there.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a camper really romantic for a honeymoon?
Yes, if you choose the right vehicle and plan the route well: a comfortable vehicle like the Super Traveller, less rushing, more enjoying. Almost every couple raves about it afterwards.
How far in advance should we book for our honeymoon?
For peak season (December to February), at least 3 to 4 months in advance. Book your vehicle, ferry, and holiday parks in Queenstown and Tekapo early.
Are there special honeymoon packages?
There's no official package, but we're happy to help with personal planning. Send us your wishes and we'll put together a concrete proposal.
What if we've never slept in a camper before?
No problem. A Chilli Rentals camper isn't a tent: a proper bed, a kitchen with a stove, running water, heating. The handover briefing walks you through everything at an easy pace. Many of our honeymoon couples had never been in a campervan before.
