Rent or buy

Renting vs. buying, side by side

Both paths lead to the same road trip. The difference lies in cost, flexibility, and responsibility.

Who presale pays off for, and who it doesn't

Presale doesn't suit every trip, and we're not going to pretend otherwise. Buying pays off once you're in the country long enough that the daily rental rate becomes your biggest cost. In practice, that's from around two months. Typical buyers are working-holiday travellers who use the campervan as home for months at a time, plus people on sabbaticals, parental leave, and couples travelling without a fixed return date.

Even if you'd rather sell the campervan yourself at the end, the model still works. The guaranteed buyback is then your safety net, not an obligation. If you find the next travellers in Auckland, Christchurch, or Queenstown to take over your vehicle, you'll often end up with more than the agreed amount, depending on the season.

For trips under about six weeks, we'd advise against it, classic renting is simpler and cheaper in the end. The same goes if you don't want to take on responsibility for a vehicle, because as the owner you handle fuel, upkeep, and the small things that come up over thousands of kilometres. If you're unsure, send us your travel dates. We'll work out both options and tell you which is cheaper for you.

Process & paperwork

Paperwork in New Zealand? We'll do it together with you.

Buying a vehicle abroad sounds more complicated than it is. New Zealand deliberately makes it easy for travellers, and we'll walk you through the part that's still left to do.

The change of ownership is registered with the New Zealand transport authority. We prepare the paperwork for this and fill it out together with you at handover. Your campervan is registered and warranted when you take it over: registration, called "rego" in New Zealand, is paid in blocks of three, six, or twelve months, and the technical inspection, the "WOF" (Warrant of Fitness), is due every six or twelve months depending on the vehicle's age. We'll tell you in advance how long both are valid for, and explain how to renew them on the road if your trip runs longer.

Third-party car insurance isn't legally required in New Zealand. We still strongly recommend getting insurance and will help you find the right policy. Damage to other people's vehicles can otherwise get seriously expensive.

The price, condition, location, and timeframe of the buyback are set out in writing before you pay. That's the most important point of the whole model to us, because verbal promises are worthless at the end of a long trip.

Transparency at buyback

What counts at buyback

So there's no argument at the end of your trip, we tell you upfront what matters. The guaranteed price applies if the campervan comes back roadworthy, clean, and complete, meaning with the camping equipment you started with, and if you drop it off at an agreed location, usually Auckland or Christchurch.

Normal wear and tear is already factored in. New Zealand's gravel roads leave their mark on every campervan after a few months, and we won't deduct anything for that. Major accident damage or missing parts get offset, transparently and in agreement with you.

You're not obligated to use the buyback either way. If you sell to the next travellers yourself at the end, there's often more in it for you. Our commitment stands until the agreed date, in case you don't find a buyer or the effort turns out to be too much.

Honestly

And if something breaks along the way?

As the owner, you cover your vehicle's running costs, just like at home. In return, you pay no daily rental fee.

You're not on your own with it, though. Get in touch with us before booking a workshop. We know the local shops, help you judge whether the price is fair, and coordinate the repair with them for you. Our campervans are proven vehicles that are inspected before handover, and they're deliberately chosen so that spare parts are available all over New Zealand.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about presale

The questions we're asked most often before a purchase, answered briefly and directly.

From when does buying pay off compared to renting?

As a rule of thumb, from around two months of travel. With renting you pay every day, with buying you essentially pay the difference between the purchase price and the guaranteed buyback. That difference stays the same whether you're on the road for two months or six. The price calculator on this page shows you the exact point for your preferred model.

How much is the guaranteed buyback price?

We calculate conservatively with 50 % of the purchase price and put that amount in writing before you pay. It's your floor: if you sell the campervan yourself to the next travellers at the end, there's often significantly more in it, depending on the season and condition.

What if I return the campervan earlier or later than planned?

That's the advantage over renting, there's no daily clock ticking. We agree on the buyback for a timeframe, not a single day. If your trip shifts, just get in touch with us.

Can I sell the campervan on myself?

Yes. Backpacker campervans are a well-established market in New Zealand, especially at the end of the season in Auckland, Christchurch, and Queenstown. The guaranteed buyback still stands until the agreed date, in case you don't find a buyer or it's too much hassle.

Do I need to insure the campervan in New Zealand?

Third-party car insurance isn't legally required in New Zealand. We still strongly recommend getting insurance, because damage to other people's vehicles can get expensive. We'll tell you which providers work for overseas owners and help you take out a policy.

What are WOF and rego?

WOF (Warrant of Fitness) is New Zealand's technical vehicle inspection, due every six or twelve months depending on the vehicle's age. Rego is the registration, paid in blocks of three, six, or twelve months. Both are valid at handover. If either expires during your trip, you take care of it as the owner, and we'll explain exactly how beforehand.

Who pays for repairs during my trip?

As the owner, you cover the running costs, but you pay no rental fee. Get in touch with us before every workshop visit: we know the shops, help judge whether the price is fair, and stay with it until the camper is back on the road.

Where do I pick up my presale campervan?

In Auckland on the North Island or Christchurch on the South Island, depending on where your trip starts. A drop-off in the other city can usually be arranged too. Just tell us your plan when you send your inquiry.

Are the presale campervans self-contained?

Three of the four presale models are certified self-contained, so you can freedom camp wherever the local council allows it. For long-term travellers especially, this is the biggest cost saver, since you're not paying for a campsite every single night.

What happens if I have to cut my trip short?

The buyback agreement still applies: you return the campervan and get the agreed amount. Talk to us as early as possible, and we'll organise the return and paperwork together.

Can I see the campervan before buying?

You'll get photos and the full vehicle details of your specific campervan in advance, plus an honest assessment of its condition. At handover, you can take your time going over the vehicle before the purchase is finalised.

Do you also sell ordinary cars with a buyback guarantee?

No, we only sell campervans. A car is cheaper to buy, but then you pay for a bed every night. With a self-contained campervan you stay for free wherever freedom camping is allowed. From around three months on the road the campervan almost always works out cheaper, even though it costs twice as much up front.

Does presale work on a working holiday visa?

Yes, and it is our most common case. New Zealand asks for neither citizenship nor residency to buy a vehicle, a working holiday visa is enough. Because the guaranteed buyback applies at any point inside the agreed period, you do not have to decide at purchase whether you are staying four months or twelve.
