The Depot: Right by the Airport
The Chilli Rentals depot is close to Christchurch Airport. From the gate to driving off in your camper often takes less than an hour, and by rideshare (15 to 25 NZD) or taxi you're there in 10 to 15 minutes.
Christchurch is the ideal starting point for the South Island, and the natural endpoint if you're coming from the North Island on the Interislander ferry (arriving in Picton, then about 2.5 hours' drive to Christchurch).
Check-in: What Happens When You Pick Up
The briefing works the same as in Auckland: passport, driver's licence, insurance, and a vehicle log with a damage check. Someone goes through it with you in person, so nothing stays unclear.
Check the excess and reduce it if you'd like. Take your time reading through the terms and ask every question you have; better to ask once too often than be surprised later.
Your first drive: Christchurch is flat and easy to navigate, making it the perfect place to get a feel for your camper. Drive through the city centre first before turning onto the Southern Motorway heading south.
Three Tried-and-Tested Routes from Christchurch
Mountains, coast, or a short day trip: these three options suit different tastes and are all an easy drive from Christchurch.
Option A · Mount Cook & Tekapo
Lake Tekapo with its turquoise water and starry skies, the Hooker Valley Track at Mount Cook, then on to Queenstown. For anyone who wants to head straight into New Zealand's most majestic mountain scenery.
Option B · Coast & Kaikōura
2.5 hours along the coastal road, passing the Ohau Point seal colony on the way, then whale watching or swimming with dolphins the next day. For animal and ocean lovers.
Option C · Banks Peninsula
1.5 hours along the Summit Road to Akaroa: views of two harbours, French colonial history, and dolphin tours. A perfect easy first day.
South Island: What You Need to Know
The South Island is wilder, emptier, and more mountainous than the North Island, but it's more demanding logistically. Petrol stations are fewer and farther between, so always fill up before heading into Fiordland or along the West Coast.
Freedom camping: the South Island has plenty of permitted spots. With a self-contained camper (Trustee Traveller, Super Traveller, Island Explorer) you get the most freedom. The Campermate app shows current permitted spots in real time.
Weather: West Coast weather is unpredictable, and Fiordland statistically gets over 200 rainy days a year. Always plan a buffer day for Milford Sound.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I return the camper in Christchurch if I start on the North Island?
- Yes, one-way rentals between Auckland and Christchurch are possible. Just let us know when booking, and we'll check availability and any one-way fee on request.
- How long does it take to drive from Picton to Christchurch?
- The route from Picton to Christchurch via State Highway 1 takes about 2.5 to 3 hours. The coastal road from Kaikōura is especially beautiful; plan a short stop at the Ohau Point seal colony.
- Is Christchurch good for a day in the city?
- Absolutely. The Botanic Gardens, the modern city centre (rebuild architecture after the 2011 earthquake), a tram tour, and the Canterbury Museum (free) easily fill half a day. In the evening, the area around New Regent Street is worth a visit.
