The Chilli Camper Sales Buy Back Option
Using our Chilli Camper Sales Buy Back Option gives you the security of knowing that you will be able to sell your car after the end of your travels. However, you will have to meet certain criteria in order for us to buy back your campervan.
Please note: If you’d like to use our buy back option we recommend you book your flights to and from Auckland as you will have to pick up and drop off your vehicle at our depot in Auckland. Organizing transport to and from Auckland within New Zealand might result in a lot of additional costs.
Generally we recommend that you sell your vehicle through channels such TradeMe or private car auctions as you will probably get a better price for it than what we can afford to pay you. If everything else fails, however, you can rest assured that we will buy back any campervan originally purchased from Chilli Camper Sale. Please choose between the following two options:
Buy Back Option 1
Gravel Road:
If you drop off your vehicle during high season (October – March), chances are that we can buy back2 your campervan for up to 50% of the vehicle value1. The purchase will be documented in a legal contract and the agreed amount of money will be credited into your bank account3.
In order for us to buy back your vehicle, the following criteria have to be met:
- You need to let us know at least 2 weeks prior to your departure from New Zealand and your planned handover of the vehicle that you’d like to make use of our buy back option Gravel Road.
- You need to make an appointment with us so we can inspect the vehicle. Inspections will be carried out at the Chilli Rentals depot in Manukau (Auckland). Please keep that in mind when finalizing your travel plans.
- We can fix any mechanical problems or damage done to the vehicle. However, we do recommend that you deal with any issues at a garage of your choice before handing the vehicle back to us. Should we have to undertake any repairs ourselves, the costs for doing so will be subtracted from the 50% vehicle value we would otherwise be willing to pay.
- The vehicle registration to legally drive on New Zealand roads needs to be valid for at least another 3 months (REGO).
- The vehicle Warrant of Fitness (WoF) needs to be valid for at least:
- for vehicles built prior the year 2000: 6 months
- for vehicles built after the year 2000: 12 months.
- All vehicles need to have been properly serviced every 5000 km. Evidence for doing so will need to be provided according to Section 2 of the Vehicle Offer and Sales Agreement.
- Generally the vehicle should be in similar condition to when it was first sold to you by Chilli Rentals, which we document in the „current state of vehicle“ section of your contract.
NOTE: Please be advised that our buy back option 1 – Gravel Road is only a makeshift solution and we can’t guarantee to purchase your vehicle back – especially if it is significantly damaged. However, we are here to help you as much as we can and are happy to talk to you about any issues arising.
Buy Back Option 2
The Last Resort:
If you drop off your vehicle during low season (April – September), we offer to store your vehicle and sell it on your behalf during the next high season. By doing so your chances of getting a good price for your campervan do increase immensely compared to you trying to sell it in the less busy season. Before you leave New Zealand we will set a minimum price that you definitely want to sell the vehicle for. This will be documented in a legal contract and the money will be credited into your bank account3 after selling the vehicle successfully.

1 The vehicle value will be determined by Chilli Camper Sales (SJF Ltd.) at the time of the customer purchasing the vehicle from Chilli Camper Sales (SJF Ltd.). Vehicle value and purchase price do not necessarily have to match.
2 Should the vehicle be in an unacceptable condition, we do reserve the right to refuse buying it back.
3 If you chose our Buy Back Option we charge a 10% commission that will be subtracted from the agreed purchase price for any costs arising. This includes a new Warrant of Fitness, 3 months registration for the next season as well as any repair or maintenance costs necessary to bring the vehicle up to standard again (e.g. interior equipment such as mattress, tent etc). Please note that the month stated in your contract for refunding your money is an estimation only. We reserve the right to hold back the payment until the vehicle has been sold and the purchase is completed.
